Awesome!

Can you recommend something to start out with? Books, visiting a class, or just by trial and error?

By virtue of what we do we are already good at looking.
The only other thing left to produce nice drawings is practice.
Repetition is good here - just draw the same thing over and over.
This will give you a good sense of line quality. - Often it's the mark making rather than technical accuracy that make drawings appealing.

Best books for product sketching are...

http://www.amazon.com/Sketching-Drawing-Techniques-Product-Designers/dp/9063691718/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196242353&sr=8-1
http://www.designsketching.com/

...and the Gnomon DVD's.

Also check out:

http://www.drawthrough.com
http://www.brookbanham.com
http://www.sydmead.com
http://www.carlliu.com

And the http://www.productdesignforums.com sketching section.

As for standard drawing/painting practice there are 1000's of books... but product sketching is harder to find.

Gary: Interesting style, reminds me of newspaper caricatures.

Hey Brian, that looks great! I can see why you're doing renderings :D

Here's another...a watercolor of my mother before she passed away
